Well guys, this is it. I'm out of here. My short career as a blogger is coming to a close. I'm hanging up my key board! Mainly because there is really nothing more to say. Your coaching is excellent. Each players' fundamental skills are solid. And the last game you showed that you can compete in the cluth...when the other team is putting on the heat like Mexico did when they scored two to make it 6-4. Since this is my last blog, there are a few things I'd like to say. I just want to share a few thoughs I've been having. I was a decent athelete at your age. I played baseball and football in highschool and I was pretty good at hoops too. I just really loved sports and I had good speed. I STILL love sports. When I watch baseball on TV, I can remember what it felt like to be out there on the field. And it gives me so much joy...especially now, at this stage of my life. I'll be 60 in December, even though I think I will always feel young in my heart. But I think the reason I love watching sports so much is because I have not been able to be a participant in any sport for over 30 years. I had a parasailing accident in September of 1978. My spinal cord was injured and I have used crutches and a wheelchair for almost 31 years now. I sure hope this does not embarrass you Austin if I tell this story. Remember when you were about 12 or 13 and I came to see you play hockey? I asked you if it was ok with you...would you please take me out on the ice with you? I figured it would be even more special to watch you skate and compete., like I was in your heart, right out there on the ice with you, feeling the exhiliration of every move you made. It was so cool, the feeling it gave me. Like it was me out there skating. WOW! And I will always be thankful that you said yes. Well, it's kinda the same for each member of the USA 16U Team. All of your family and friends care about you young men. They love you and are routing for you. They want you to do well and enjoy the experience. And just have fun! If you do your best, the results will take care of themselves. I'm gonna let you all in on a secret that works for me. Probably my greatest gift is music. I play a mean guitar and have a great voice. I even write songs and one day I hope to do a collection on CD. EVERY TIME I strap on the guitar and get ready to sing, I start out by being THANKFUL for what I know I am capable of and will soon DO! I get lost in the experience. I sing the words and see the story in my mind, kinda like a movie. Something magical happens. In sports terminology, I am IN THE ZONE. And most of the time you could record that two hours of practice and it would be nearly perfect, the best that I can do. It feels incredible EVERY time. Now for the last part of my secret. I pretend that each time I play or and sing, it could be the LAST time. Maybe the arthritis in my shoulders will get too bad for me to play fast or funcky rythm on the guitar anymore. Or my singing voice could get weak or just leave or sound terrible. My point is, when you bat, catch, run, or throw the ball, always be thankful for what you can do as young baseball players. Having gratitude for the natural gift you've been given will make all of you not only better ball players, but better human beings too! So, thanks for putting up with all of my narly blogs. I was just trying to have some fun back here in Michigan. Korea is gonna be a big challenge. But I know you fellas are up to it. I sure will be pulling for all of you guys in the medal rounds. When you bois get back to the STATES, keep your grades up and keep practicing your baseball skills. Maybe I'll see you guys playing 18U Baseball someday. GO USA! And finally, I am so grateful for those who provided the live feed and the great write ups for each game. Next season I'm anxious to see you play for the first time, Austin! I'll be looking forward to that! Love, Uncle Tom
